INTRODUCTION
We Americans are living in an increasingly violent and dangerous world. As hard as this is for us to comprehend, for company owners, two things must be clearly understood:
- CEO's, Branch Managers, Supervisors, and Employers must recognize their responsibility to be proactive in the prevention of workplace violence and aggressively employ measures, programs, and procedures to insure the safety and security of employees and customers.
- The responsibility for the development and implementation of these programs must be vested in Managers with specific knowledge and experience in security and safety.
American society has become increasingly violent. Societal pressures, changes in value systems, and the increase of cultural diversity have all contributed to a breakdown of American "Societal Norms". Added to this is the new threat of Terrorism, and Drug related violence. This new "paradigm" is causing and alarming increase in violence in the workplace. Moreover, the threat to Companies of litigation stemming from injuries due to workplace violence is certain. In today's litigious climate an employee or other victim of violence may quickly demand redress in Court, perhaps on a scale of millions of dollars. Not only could this have a negative impact on a company financially, there are other factors to consider as well. The psychological depressive effect of violence on employee morale cannot be overstated. In addition it can hinder the company's ability to recruit and retain effective employees. Ultimately affecting the very survival of the company. A Company's reputation is one of its most important assets. Stockholders want to have confidence that the companies they invest in are well managed and are able to deal appropriately with a crisis.
A Company that does not effectively deal with workplace violence places its reputation and future in jeopardy.
